Small Town Sociopaths. Miniseries Review: Evil Genius

07:32 May 26 2018
Times Read: 227

Bloody greetings to the dark and the light. Evil Genius is a documentary in four parts about a bank heist 2003. Apparently a man walked into a bank with a long note and a "cane gun" and walked out with about 8 thousand dollars. He was then nabbed by police but they couldn't take him in as he had an explosive device strapped to his neck. Held at gun point the man, a pizza delivery driver, died when the bomb exploded after a timer expired. The show is about the investigation that followed.

It's great! Very dark and graphic, I don't recommend it unless you want something mysterious and can stomach a bit of real life violence. The story follows the police in interviews and pulls no punches, giving us some of the internal workings of how detectives and the FBI operate in cases like this. Was this man a victim? Was he part of the conspiracy? Who controlled him and how? It's terrifying how efficient both the cops and the criminals are in this game of life and death, with liars on one side and brutal authority on the other. The scariest thing about this is it teaches some things about ourselves. We may not be murderers but secrets come out no matter how crafty we are.

The film work and journalism here are also very good. It doesn't bore us with irrelevant details or an interview with everyone the film maker likely talked to. Clean and well paced, it starts out entertaining but as we go down the rabbit hole it turns our stomach inside out. Very effective.

I recommend this show if you like horror. That's about it. It's horror, and it's real. There is no bright sunshine in this story but the reality is played smart, not sick.

Has The Walking Dead bled out? Season 7 opener review.

06:56 May 23 2018
Times Read: 245

Hi ghouls and ghoulets. If you don't know The Walking Dead is an AMC show currently on it's 8th season. I watched about 3 seasons when it started but ran out of stamina. I felt season 4 was a little dry for me and I didn't finish. So what about now? The fan base has started to drop as of two years ago and some are calling for it to end due to lower viewership. But what about the show, has it really jumped the shark or is it still watchable? Season 7 opener was ok.

This show is great for what it is, I really think so. And the acting and writing are still great. But after this long with the same exact formula it's stale I would say. Not only is it the same theme of survival, power and death one-by-one but they seem not to be able to come up with much other than a big bad guy with bad ideas. That was season 3, then they did it again in season 7. They need to do something new. People, and I don't blame them, are getting bored.

After meeting the bad guy for season 7 we know exactly what's going to happen. They will be enslaved. Lot's of death and then Rick will take him on or maybe they'll twist it up. The details are unimportant it's the theme I think needs work. How about a cure for the walkers that some scientist comes up with, but then it fall into the wrong hands? Or maybe they make it to safety and then the trauma starts to turn them against each other? Whatever. It needs something new. Especially after this long. Everyone does a good job but we've been on this walk a long time.

Maraselah eats Black Panther, partial review. No spoilers.

Sigh. Black Panther is this movie you know about. And maybe saw. And so did the whole world. They're laughing all the way to the bank.

First of all I only saw a few scenes, I don't really watch this kind of movie. It was free so little disclaimer, I haven't seen the whole thing. But it really really sucked.

These are great actors. And actresses. They prolly went to school and it's very hard work to do a film this size. Usually. I felt like they were just phoning it in. Sloppily and lazily written, the best thing about the movie is the way it looks. It's making fun of stereotypes, I get that, but it's not funny. Or is it supposed to be serious? I don't think anyone in the production of this movie took it seriously except the poor guy who had to do all the special effects. I couldn't sit through it.
It's the same joke over and over again "isn't racism hilarious." clap clap clap for the entire film! Hey Hollywood! Hire some real writers!

Len Wiesman sells his soul. Or does he? TV Review Lucifer.

03:02 May 20 2018
Times Read: 264

Hollywood. Tinseltown. Fame money and more sex than you want. Or is that a stereotype? Wiesman proves once again he cares more about content than cash and creates a show that's not a sellout. What if the Devil was a P.I.? Who could stand against him? What secret could be hidden? It's a fantastic idea, based on a comic by Neal Gaiman.

Now this show isn't going to appeal to you unless you have an interest in mystery and twists and turns. The plot coils around us as the pilot starts with the death of an actress that the Devil had plans for. Is he being nice? Is he just mad he was interrupted? Does the Devil love and care for his flock? Well it's a horror story at it's core and more about California than any judgement of Angels. It's clever enough to keep us from rolling out eyes and the plot is unpredictable.

I do have one criticism. There isn't enough friction with Lucifer and the Angels. He just roams unchecked and I would personally prefer if it were more two sided. With no one to stop him or even make him stumble in any real way it can be dry. But I do think this is going for a slick detective story and it does well with that. I've only watched 1 1/2 episodes but by now something to interrupt his progress should have happened. In other words it's just demons and humans and a third party would be a welcome plot device in my opinion. But I do recommend. It's fun and takes us inside a world that we don't get so see much. The party life of the Devil.

No vampires in this one but way fun. Hellboy 2: The Golden Army review

03:46 May 19 2018
Times Read: 276

Greetings. Hellboy 2: The Golden Army is story of magical creatures invading the human world in a quest to wipe it all out, with only Hellboy and his magical allies to stop them. I know, I know it's a formula we've seen. Heroes in secret fighting a force that unsuspecting helpless civilians can't fathom. But it's fun and very smart. Directed by Guilllmo del Toro who I consider one of the best. Ron Pearlman returns in the lead with Selma Blair as his flame-wielding girlfriend. Came out in 2008.

I really love this movie and go back to it again and again. Prince Nuada is so much fun in his noble quest to murder all of humanity. He's nuts but we understand him. As I watch the story pulls me back and forth from who I want to win and the story doesn't chose a side really. The elves are crazy and uncivilized and humanity is creepy and full of greed. Hellboy is an antihero, he just wants to eat and get his woman pregnant. But I wouldn't call this movie that dark because it's all done with silliness and a dry wit. It's more of a sardonic take on the common formula than the real thing and is wholly original.

If you're into creative things on screen you haven't seen before del Toro is for you. More than they first one we see all kinds of strange and weird creatures from everywhere from Hell to Scotland. We see trolls, fish men, tooth fairies, German scientists with no head and so on. They really did the work to do something creative that's not going to bore. All of it is handled with wonderful taste and good looking effects that don't glare like an Autobot.

They're making Hellboy 3 with the director of Game of Thrones, I'll definitely check it out. I recommend you don't miss this one too, a fantastic addition to the series and in my opinion better than the first.

TV Review: Preacher

02:11 May 19 2018
Times Read: 285

Howdy. Preacher is the story of a holy man in Texas looking for God after he goes missing. It features a vampire named Cassidy and an ex soldier who is dating and in love with the Preacher. It's based on a comic from the 90s and was made by AMC.

I loved every second of it and want to finish the whole thing. It's full of witty banter about the supernatural and the American south, as well as cool supernatural characters like angels and immortal saints. Unlike most of the stuff about Heaven and Hell it's not stupid and takes it seriously and not-so seriously at the same time. I watched three episodes from season 2 and there was a girl in a cage, an unstoppable cowboy, the death of an angel and a munchie stop at a gas station after a bloody gun fight. Reminded me of Kill Bill only funnier.

Fans of the comic (like me) have little to complain about. Cassidy is well handled and understood by the writers and the spirit of the adventure remains intact. With so much stuff being made about superheroes it's nice to see something from comics that's not about colorful costumes, and it still looks great. Gritty and surprisingly believable it's a comic show for adults that don't want to watch another CG battle with Thor. There's sincerity and skill from all the actors and we never feel like it's being phoned-in. There is some politically correct stuff about a gun show but it feels more honest than marketing. They probably had fun making it but clearly worked very hard.

In a world of movies that just want a quick buck these days I recommend checking it out if you have access to AMC. Instead of two hours in a crowded theater buying popcorn at 10 bucks a pop you can watch something better and cook french.
